Borno State Agro-Climatic Resilience in semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) has implemented two significant initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and addressing critical community needs.
This report highlights the drilling of some number of solar powered boreholes intervention in some communities and the commencement of distribution of 10 million seedlings in Borno State.
Borehole Intervention:
ACRESAL had drilled boreholes in several communities to alleviate water challenges and supply needs. Beneficiaries have testified to the significant impact of this intervention, citing now the reduced difficulties in accessing water for gardening, vegetable farming, and domestic uses.
“Before the boreholes were drilled, we faced a lot of challenges of accessing clean water, but now we are very happy that we are getting relief day after day from the Solar powered Boreholes so said by the Village Head of Ngamdu(A) Babagana Abba Yusuf. He went further and said “I do not know how to thank the ACReSAL project and the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum mni, FNSE, CON for their combined efforts in delivering these projects.” We now have three Solar powered boreholes which have increased our livelihood.
Speaking also, the of Ngamdu (B) Ba Lawan Goroma was also full of happiness for what ACReSAL had done to the Manari community.
He said “we were suffering from accessing potable water supply, we only used the pond water which was not clean enough for human consumption but now we have three solar powered boreholes and additional three solar powered boreholes will be completed in the next one month, adding that the community of mannari and the entire people of Ngamdu are grateful for ACReSAL for putting smiles on their faces”.
Also speaking a community leader, Bukar Jatoma said before the intervention of ACReSAL, they have to cross over the road and walked a long distance before they could get water and which usually was not enough to satisfy domestic needs but now, they are blessed with solar powered boreholes which do not require any diesel or fuel.
A women leader by the name Hajja Hamidu was not left out in expressing her tremendous happiness. She was full of thanks to ACReSAL as well as the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum mni, FNSE, CON for bringing these projects to their area.
The ACReSAL team was also at Mafa Local Government where similar project was also delivered to the Community. some beneficiaries of the community which include the Director of Agriculture and Natural Resources ,Babagana Rufai said “ three communities namely Hausari, Fulatari and wulari are benefiting maximally from the free flow water drilled by ACReSAL project, he said the availability of water has engaged the communities in agricultural activities which enabled them to cultivate wheat, rice and vegetables and therefore thank ACReSAL for the initiative”.
Seedling Distribution:
The Borno State Government with the support of ACReSAL has commenced the distribution and planting of 10million seedlings to communities across the 15 Local Government areas of the State.
This effort aims to restore the encroaching desertification, deforestation and of course the mitigation of Climate change effects.
Beneficiaries have expressed gratitude for the initiative, acknowledging the importance of trees in maintaining ecological balance in the environment.
“We used to have a lot of trees, but due to the Boko Haram conflict, particularly in Borno, we lost most of our trees due to fear of harbouring criminals along the along the major road. Now that the situation has improved the planting of trees along the major roads is going to be restored. We will continue to plant more trees, we will not stop”. The vice Chairman Mafa LG, Mustapha Bukar while expressing his happiness.
The collaborative efforts of the Borno State Government and ACRESAL have yielded positive impacts on environmental sustainability and community well-being. The distribution of seedlings and borehole intervention are aimed at addressing critical needs, and beneficiaries have expressed heartfelt appreciations for these initiatives. Continued support and expansion of such programs are crucial for maintaining ecological balance and promoting resilience in the face of climate change and conflict.
