Transforming Lives Through Water Access in Manari Community

Introduction:-

In the heart of Borno State, the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project has brought hope and transformation to the Manari community in the Ngamdu-Kaga Local Government Area. The recent drilling of six solar-powered boreholes has significantly alleviated the severe water scarcity faced by this community, impacting over 10,000 residents and improving their quality of life.

Water Scarcity: A Community’s Struggle

Before the intervention by ACReSAL, the situation in Manari was dire. Community leader Bukar Gana Alhaji shared the challenges they faced, describing the struggle for clean water as “pathetic.” Residents trekked over two kilometers to access contaminated stream water, putting them at risk of waterborne diseases, including cholera. Over 10,000 people were affected by this scarcity, with dire consequences for their health and well-being.

The Turning Point: Solar-Powered Boreholes

The drilling of solar-powered boreholes marked a turning point for the community. Bukar Gana Alhaji expressed his gratitude toward ACReSAL, noting that the new boreholes have effectively ended the water crisis. Other beneficiaries, such as Aji Alhassan, echoed his sentiments, highlighting that more than 10,000 individuals directly benefit from the boreholes, with an additional 5000 to 6000 people gaining indirect access. Aji added that the community no longer faces the long queues and struggles associated with obtaining water from distant and unsafe sources.

Economic Relief and Savings-

The financial impact of these boreholes cannot be overstated. Households in Manari now save an average of 45,000 naira per month that would have otherwise been spent on purchasing water. This newfound financial relief enables families to allocate resources to other essential needs, improving their overall living conditions.

Local water vendor Saleh Adamu shared his experience, noting that the demand for his services has diminished since the boreholes were drilled. Previously, he traveled up to three kilometers to sell water, but now the community’s needs are adequately met by the abundant clean water supply, eliminating the need for his services.

Personal Testimonies of Change

The voices of community members resonate with gratitude and relief. Fana Ibrahim, a married woman from Manari, reflected on the community’s struggles before the project, stating, “We suffered seriously as a result of scarcity of water. But now, we don’t have any problems with water again.” Her words highlight the transformative impact of the project on daily life.

Conclusion:

The ACReSAL project’s initiative to drill solar-powered boreholes in Manari has not only provided a sustainable solution to water scarcity but has also heralded economic and health benefits for the community. The voices of gratitude from residents signify a brighter future, one where access to clean water is no longer a luxury but a standard—a crucial step toward resilience and sustainability in the face of climate challenges. The success of this project exemplifies the power of community-driven initiatives and the substantial change that can be achieved through targeted interventions. Thank you, ACReSAL, for your commitment to improving lives in Borno State.
