Borno ACReSAL Launches Awareness Campaign Against Bush Fires in Tamsu Kawu, Kaga, and Mafa Local Governments.

In a committed effort to promote environmental sustainability and address the challenges posed by climate change, the Borno Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project has initiated a comprehensive sensitization campaign against bush fires in several communities across the state.

This initiative specifically targets areas where the project has invested in agroforestry practices.

The campaign was led by Project Coordinator Mr. Ayuba Peter, represented by Communication Officer Timothy Butu Mwada, who addressed the communities about the causes of bush fires and various preventive measures that can be adopted to safeguard both homes and the existing planted trees.

Mr. Mwada emphasized the importance of community vigilance, urging residents to actively monitor their environments to prevent intentional fire ignitions. He highlighted the detrimental effects of uncontrolled bush fires, including soil degradation, reduced agricultural yields, and increased carbon emissions, all of which exacerbate climate change.

Community leader Bukar Gombema expressed gratitude on behalf of the community to ACReSAL and the World Bank for their dedicated efforts in restoring degraded lands and enhancing the livelihoods of local residents.

Fire service officers Ahmadu Isa and Safiyo Bukar Ngulde contributed valuable insights into fire prevention strategies. They provided a practical demonstration of effective fire control techniques that can be employed during emergencies, incorporating both modern and traditional methods of fire suppression.

Additionally, informative flyers detailing the causes of bush burning and preventive measures were distributed to participants to further educate the communities.

The team continued its outreach to Mafa Local Government, where similar activities were conducted. Local leadership in Mafa Alhaji Buba Ummatteh and Mallam Mohammed Usman expressed heartfelt thanks for the vital information shared, recognizing the initiative’s significance in empowering them to protect their environment against bush fires.

This campaign represents a significant step towards fostering community awareness and action in the fight against bush fires, ensuring a sustainable and resilient environment for future generations.
